Information about the artist / the group

Jane Hughes is a visual artist (b.1984, Ireland) who lives and works in Helsinki and Perniö, working with painting, drawing and installation. Her art practice explores landscape and the nature of decay in the form of ruins and disintegrating memories through painting. She is interested in the complex histories of sacred places such as holy wells, forests, and remote islands. Her recent solo exhibitions include; We Gulp Dark Moons, Galleria Napa, Rovaniemi, (2024); These fragments I have shored against my ruins, Tm•gallery, Helsinki (2023). Her work is part of public collections such as the Irish State Collection and Finnish State Deposit Collection.

There will be several open studios as part of Grey Garden Studios and refreshments.

Driving directions

There are two entrances to visit Grey Garden Studios. My studio is located on the 2nd floor of the lower side building attached to Meritorni tower. Once inside I can also guide you to my neighbours studios on 2nd and 3rd floors. To visit my studio go to Grey Garden (Entrance B) There is a Grey Garden sticker on glass doors. It is opposite the Stadin Ammattiopisto entrance. There is a doorbell you can ring and then please wait to be greeted. Alternatively call / text my mobile. Other Grey Garden Studios located on this 2nd floor wing include Carla Lundell, Marloes Van Son.

Alternatively you can enter through entrance A in the main building of Meritorni tower. There is no doorbell, there will be someone to greet visitors every hour and half hour ( eg 11, 11:30, 12, 12:30 etc) otherwise call / text me or the artist you wish to visit to arrange to be let in.
Then you take the elevator to the 2nd or 3rd floor but you will need to call / text the artist to be greeted to get through the locked doors of the corridors.
