I am a textile artist Sannu Vaarala and I work in my textile studio in Rovaniemi. In my work, I have developed the technique of three-dimensional textile relief. For me, an important part of artistic work is experimentation, freedom and curiosity about new materials and techniques. I apply sewing, dyeing and embroidery methods in my works. I mainly use recycled materials such as textiles and plastics. I have held exhibitions in various parts of Finland, e.g. In Oulu, Galleria 5. In Lappeenranta, Taidekeskus Itä and in Helsinki, Asbestos Art Space. I am part of the Kirjotut kannat collective, whose members make contemporary textile art using blanket embroidery techniques. I am also involved in projects combining different art forms.
At the open doors, you have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the techniques of sewn textile relief, follow my artistic work and chat over a cup of coffee. During the weekend, I work on a piece for the autumn exhibition using dyeing and sewing techniques. As my guest, you will get to see how recycled textile materials take new three-dimensional shapes. There is also a small-scale exhibition of previous works. If desired, it is possible to buy works or agree on a commission work.
Enter the building from the Steiner School's Viirinkankaantie 1. entrance (Keltakangas sports hall + large parking area). You can already see the Konstrundan signs in the yard. Walk to the elevator or take the stairs to the 2nd floor. Follow the signs to room 238B, which is on the same corridor as the Christian School.
